Senior Accountant

Work with our Controller and Accounting team at Chicago Lights and Fourth Presbyterian Church, the second largest Presbyterian church in the U.S.

Fourth Presbyterian Church seeks a Senior Accountant for the second largest Presbyterian church in the United States and its nonprofit organization, Chicago Lights. Working with the Controller and Accounting team, the Senior Accountant will prepare and record daily cash transactions, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information. They will maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies. They also will develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.

Fourth Presbyterian Church is located on Chicago’s vibrant Michigan Avenue. The complex of historic and modern buildings welcomes hundreds of people each day, including members, guests, church staff, and others. Programs offer services to those who seek faith and guidance, are active in one of our many community programs, participate in one of our associated mission programs, or those who desire a few moments of peace and refuge on our buildings and grounds.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily journal entries and summaries of cash and credit card transactions (IATS)

  • Collaborate with Resource Development on recording pledges and processing Raisers Edge gift batches

  • Prepare deposits

  • Record and reconcile stock gift activity, investment activity, and update and reconcile investment rollforward

  • Reconcile fund balances and prepare journal entries

  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and update schedules

  • Prepare bank reconciliations

  • Generate financial statements for Fourth Presbyterian Church and department monthly reports, as needed

  • Participate in annual budget and forecast processes

  • Assist with preparation of audit lead schedules

  • Support month-end and year-end close process

  • Provide backup assistance to other accounting functions, as needed

  • Identity opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of current processes

  • Use the S.P.I.R.I.T. principles of hospitality when interacting with visitors, guests, members, and staff of Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

  • A minimum of seven years of progressive accounting experience, nonprofit is highly preferred

  • Proficiency in computerized accounting systems such as Intacct, Great Plains or Blackbaud Financial Edge desired

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel (v-lookup, mid function, etc.) essential

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high initiative flexibility and team approach; must be comfortable working with staff at all levels across the organization

  • Thorough, quality-conscious, and detailed-oriented

  • Demonstrates job competencies in the following areas:

Schedule

Monday–Friday, (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.), 40 hours per week
